DESIGN CHALLENGE

These experimental posters will promote and motivate public interest in LatinX Type Designers and their contemporary typefaces. Explore experimental approaches to poster design and layout to create emotional resonance, a beautiful visual hierarchy, and a dynamic, balanced layout.

SOLUTION

The Petala Pro font family, designed by Marconi Lima and published by his Brazilian foundry Typefolio, reflects a rich typographic heritage. Inspired by skate photography, I incorporated images by J. Grant Brittain and Brian Fick, along with Brazilian skaters. A black-and-white photo captures an anonymous skater, while a purple-toned image of Bob Burnquist honors the typeface’s roots. This fusion of experimental type and dynamic imagery conveys the energy of Brazilian and skate cultures. Showcased at the Keller Gallery pop-up, the work sparked a new appreciation for Latinx type designers among students and faculty.
